Project name: Kou Ramen
Location site: Westpac Place, Sydney
Date of completion: November 2019
Project type: Interior & branding design
Following the success of their Blacktown restaurant, Kou Ramen’s second store in Westpac Place serves quality authentic Japanese food in the heart of the city. The concept for Kou Ramen Westpac Place was inspired by the colours and textures found in a ramen bowl; warm tones such as orange, yellow and red were selected to create a lively and refreshing brand. Linear motifs were a key component in the design to reflect the making of the ramen noodles and the pulling motion used by chefs, which is echoed in the continuation of the timber strips from floor to ceiling.
With clean simplistic lines and natural textures from timber and stone, the store has a modern look whilst retaining its Japanese roots. The vertical slats with coloured edging on the shopfront creates a playful gradient as you move from one end of the counter to the next. This correlates with a layered ceiling feature to create an eye-catching shopfront full of character and movement.
