Inspired by the thrill of discovering a tucked-away hidden gem in urban Japan, Izakaya Uomichi brings that same sense of serendipity to Sydney. The design concept draws on the idea of uncovering a secret spot, hidden in plain sight, evoking the nostalgia of Japanese alleyways and the warm, welcoming vibe of a well-kept local secret.

The restaurant’s exterior invites curiosity with its signature Japanese lantern, reminiscent of Japan’s street food alleys. The weathered laser-cut wooden signage, combined with a blue curtain on the side of the entrance with Japanese traditional handwritten letters, creates an ambiance as though the place has been there for ages and has a lot of history. With open sushi bar, allows patrons to engage with the culinary process and see the chef’s action, adding an element of transparency and connection that’s quintessential to the Izakaya experience. The highlight of the restaurant is the hand-crafted wooden materials with a bold texture combined with timber finishes that tighten the whole concept together from the exterior to the interior and even all the smallest details across the space.

To enhance the whole ambiance, the inside of the restaurant is made tight and full to represent the real dining experience in Japan. Continues to embrace the tradition, delicate curtains adorned with calligraphy and thoughtfully placed movie posters, as well as Japanese traditional figurines contribute to the feeling of stepping into a familiar space - as if you’re visiting a friend’s home. The booth seating is a perfect space for groups to gather, fostering a social atmosphere.
